“The announcement that the federal Department of Transportation will rescind approval of New York City’s congestion relief program is not unexpected, but is a terrible mistake. The program was established under state law and is working exactly as intended. It has resulted in reduced traffic congestion, safer streets, cleaner air, and is producing revenues for mass transit. Discontinuing the program would require the state to find a way to replace those toll revenues, most likely through increased taxes. After only four weeks of congestion pricing, an independent poll by Morning Consult found that 66% of the drivers who pay the toll support the program and 59% of voters statewide want President Trump to allow it to continue. The only reason to rescind approval is a campaign promise that was made before the program was in effect and everyone saw the benefits. On behalf of the business community and the taxpayers of New York, we urge President Trump to allow the program to continue. We thank Governor Hochul for her swift action to bring litigation that rightfully challenges DoT’s attempt to override a state law.”
